Shadow Puppet Museum

Shadow Puppet Museum
The Shadow Puppet Museum of Suchart Subsin.

On a side street near Wat Phra Mahathat is the home of the south's master of shadow puppetry, Suchart Subsin. Suchart has turned his home into a museum of shadow puppetry where you can see puppets collected from all over the world as well as craftsmen at work making new puppets.

The museum is housed in a collection of traditional southern style wooden homes. There's a small shop where you can purchase puppets, as well as tee-shirts and other memorabilia, but amazingly there is no charge to enter the museum or even a donation box.

Getting There

The Puppet Museum is down a small alley off of Si Thammasok Road about 2 kilometers (1.5 miles) from the city center. The best way to get there is by songthaew down Rachadamnoen road to Wat Phra Mahathat, then walk down one of the small alleys across from the temple to Si Thamasok Road, then cross the street and walk a short way back towards town to find Si Thamasok Soi 3. The museum is well signed from here.
