Wat Khao Suwankhiri

For me, this mountain-top temple is one of the most impressive in all of Sukhothai. The huge bell-shaped stupa is perched on the highest point of the ridge that runs through the middle of the old walled city of Si Satchanalai. The chedi sits on a five-tier square base.

Behind the large stupa is a smaller chedi, enclosed in its own boundary wall. In front of the main tower are the remains of a large prayer hall, while the ruins of another wiharn are behind the chedi to the south.

The temple is reached by the pathway that runs along the spine of the ridge of hills running through Si Satchanalai. You can start at Wat Khao Phnom Phloeng, then follow the path down past the Chao Mae La-Ong Sam Lee Shrine. You'll come to a four-way intersection at the saddle of the ridge. Continue straight through and up the stairs to Wat Khao Suwankhiri.
