Wat Nang Phaya

Wat Nang Phaya
Wat Nang Phaya

This "temple of the queen" is the first in a line of temples leading from the southeast wall up to the ridge that divides the city. It has the best remaining portion of wall that displays the intricate stucco-work that once decorated all of the temples at Si Satchanalai.

Entering the temple from the east-southeast, you first come to the remains of the prayer hall (wiharn). On your left is the remaining wall, with its protecting roof and scaffolding. The delicate stucco decorations appear to be designed to replicate carved wood panels. The floral scroll patterns are similar to other designs found in Lanna (northern Thai) temples.

Behind the prayer hall is the main chedi. A set of stairs on the east side of the stupa leads up to a small chamber in the bell of the chedi.

Wat Nang Phaya dates from the fiftheenth or sixteenth century.
