When most people talk about visiting 'Krabi' they usually mean the Ao Nang area. The stretch of beach west of Railay is the most heavily developed area, although Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta are also well developed, but better known as distinct destinations in their own right. There are several other areas with hotels, as shown in the map above. If you want to stay some place less 'crowded' you might consider Railay or the Tubkaak area.
There seem to be over 100 hotels in the Ao Nang area of Krabi. Finding just the right one can be a bit difficult. I've made a few suggestions below, based on feedback from trusted friends and fellow travelers.
Aonang Phu Petra Resort Pakasai Resort Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas One of the more luxe options in the Ao Nang area. It's just a little south of the main village, so it offers a nice mix of privacy and access to outside restaurants and shopping.
The Klong Muang area covers a long stretch of coastline west of Ao Nang. It's about a 45 minute drive from the Krabi Airport. While there are now several hotels in the area it is still less developed than the central part of Ao Nang. Tonsai is a small stretch of beach between Railay and Ao Nang. Like Railay, Tonsai can only be reached by boat, from Ao Nang. There are just a few resorts on the beach here, as listed below. Tubkaak, which I've also seen transliterated as Tubkaek or Tupkaek, is the beach furthest from the built-up area of Ao Nang. It's about a 30 minute drive from Ao Nang, or nearly an hour from the Krabi Airport. This makes it rather isolated, which is exactly what some people are looking for.
