Although Nakhon Phanom is a little off the main tourist trail, it isn't exactly hard to get to. The small airport sees two or three flights a day from Bangkok, while there is bus service from most major cities around Thailand, such as Chiang Rai, Khon Kaen and Nakorn Ratchasima, as well as Bangkok.
Getting to Nakhon Phanom by Air
Low cost carriers Nok Air and Air Asia both fly between Bangkok and Nakhon Phanom. Note that as of October 2012 both airlines fly from the old Don Muang airport.
The airport is about 5 kilometers from Nakhon Phanom town. A shared van into the city costs 80 Baht (2.08 USD) while a private car will cost more. You can also get a transfer to other destinations, such as That Phanom, but this can be rather expensive.
Getting to Nakhon Phanom by Bus
The bus station is on the western edge of the city center (see map). You can get buses to or from Nakhon Phanom to Bangkok, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Sakhon Nakhon, Khon Kaen and Mukdahan, among others. You can also catch a bus here to Tha Kaek in Laos.
