The December 2004 tsunami had a devastating effect on Khao Lak. Almost all of the area's 80 or so resorts were severly damaged or even completely destroyed. Many have since been rebuilt, and joined by new resorts.
When selecting a resort, one important consideration, as ever, is location. "Khao Lak" is actually a term applied to quite a large area of the Phang Nga coast, stretching around 16 kilometers. Parts of it are relatively built-up, while other areas are somewhat isolated. If you want to be close to lots of restaurants, shops and services, then you probably want to consider hotels in the Nang Thong or Bang Niang beaches area. The more isolated - and posh - resorts can be found on Laem Pakarang or Pakweeb Beach.
We've selected a short list of the hotels now available in Khao Lak. Among these, the Sarojin is getting the most positive reviews from guests we've contacted. - Khaolak Bhandari Resort
- Pleasant little resort in one of the more developed areas of Khao Lak.
- Ramada Khao Lak Resort
- Don't let the name fool you, this beachfront resort is rather luxurious, with stand-alone villas as well as standard rooms.
- The Sarojin
- The Sarojin was something of a ground-breaker when it opened, being one of the very first of a new breed of posh resorts in the area.
- JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa
- If you want to blow some points, or earn a bunch, then the JW is probably the place to do. It's a very nice resort at the far end of the Khao Lak area.
